Dwight Gooden’s Rookie Strikeout Record - Heartfelt History™

Dwight Gooden’s Rookie Strikeout Record

On September 12, 1984, 19-year-old New York Mets phenom Dwight “Doc” Gooden broke Major League Baseball’s single-season rookie strikeout record.

Facing the Pittsburgh Pirates at Shea Stadium, the right-hander threw a five-hit, 2–0 complete-game shutout, striking out 16 batters. When Gooden struck out Pirates center fielder Marvell Wynne, it was his 246th strikeout of the season—breaking the rookie mark of 245 set by Cleveland’s Herb Score in 1955. Gooden finished the afternoon with 251 strikeouts.

Armed with an overpowering fastball and a devastating curveball, Gooden had become one of baseball’s most electrifying young pitchers. He did not issue a walk in the shutout, making the record-breaking performance one of the highlights of an extraordinary rookie season.

By season’s end, Gooden was 17–9 with a 2.60 ERA and 276 strikeouts in 218 innings. He won the 1984 National League Rookie of the Year Award, and his 276 strikeouts remain the MLB rookie-season record.
