
On September 10, 1923, astronomers and other observers assembled at sites in Southern California and Mexico to observe a total solar eclipse. They brought cameras, telescopes, spectrographs, and meteorological equipment to record the brief period of totality, when the Moon’s shadow made the Sun’s outer atmosphere and nearby stars more accessible to observation. The path of totality crossed Southern California and northern Mexico, while locations such as Los Angeles and San Diego experienced a deep partial eclipse.
The eclipse offered an opportunity to photograph the solar corona, study its spectrum, and pursue other astronomical questions. It also provided another possible occasion to examine Einstein’s general theory of relativity: during totality, photographs of stars near the darkened Sun could be compared with reference images to look for the small apparent displacement predicted if the Sun’s gravity bends starlight. Scientists had already reported strong agreement between earlier eclipse measurements and Einstein’s prediction, and not every expedition treated the 1923 event as a decisive new relativity test.
Cloud and fog complicated some coastal observations, including at Santa Catalina Island, where observers reportedly saw only brief glimpses of the eclipsed Sun. Other teams obtained useful observations from Mexico, including corona photographs made at Puerto Libertad, Sonora.
The 1923 eclipse therefore illustrates the practical realities of early twentieth-century field astronomy: researchers transported specialized instruments to remote observing sites, depended on favorable weather during only a few minutes of darkness, and used eclipse observations to investigate the Sun, Earth’s atmosphere, and fundamental questions in physics.
