On September 10, 1898, Bessie Love was born Juanita Horton in Midland, Texas. After her family moved to Los Angeles, she began her screen career with D. W. Griffith, who gave her the name Bessie Love and cast her in early films, including a small role in Intolerance (1916).
Love became one of the familiar faces of silent-era Hollywood, first playing youthful, wholesome heroines and later taking on the spirited flapper roles associated with the 1920s. She is widely credited with performing the first Charleston dance on film in The King on Main Street (1925), helping bring the dance to a wider American audience.
Her career continued successfully into the sound era. Love earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her work in MGM’s The Broadway Melody (1929), a landmark early sound musical. She later relocated to England and continued acting in theater, radio, television, and film. Her career stretched from 1915 to 1983—nearly seven decades—and remains a notable example of an actor who worked across the silent, sound, and television eras.
