On September 4, 1928, American stage, radio, film, and television actor Dick York was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He became a familiar face to millions of viewers in the 1960s after originating the role of Darrin Stephens, the often-exasperated mortal husband of Samantha Stephens, on ABC’s fantasy sitcom Bewitched.
York’s performance helped define the show’s early years. His expressive physical comedy, rapid-fire reactions, and skill at playing disbelief against the series’ supernatural chaos made the first Darrin Stephens especially memorable. Alongside Elizabeth Montgomery’s Samantha, York helped establish Bewitched as one of television’s major hits.
Before Bewitched, York had built a substantial career in radio, theater, and film. He worked in radio from a young age and later appeared on Broadway. He also took on dramatic screen roles, including Bertram Cates, the embattled teacher at the center of Stanley Kramer’s 1960 courtroom drama Inherit the Wind. The contrast between that serious role and his later sitcom work reflected his range as a character actor.
York’s time on Bewitched was shadowed by severe chronic back pain. He had injured his back while filming the 1959 movie They Came to Cordura, and the condition worsened over time, making the demands of a weekly television series increasingly difficult. By 1969, he was no longer able to continue in the role and left the series; Dick Sargent later took over as Darrin Stephens.
In later life, York largely withdrew from acting but devoted considerable energy to helping people experiencing homelessness, including work conducted from his home in Michigan. He died in 1992, but his original portrayal of Darrin remains a defining part of Bewitched’s legacy.
