The Paul Revere House: Preserving a Patriot’s Home

A photograph taken on August 20, 1931, captures the timber‑framed exterior of the Paul Revere House in Boston’s North End—the oldest surviving residential building in downtown Boston. Built around 1680, the home served as Revere’s base from 1777 to 1800 as he ran his silversmith business and coordinated revolutionary intelligence networks.

Purchased for preservation in 1908, the house became a cornerstone of the early colonial revival movement. Protecting its low ceilings, leaded‑glass windows, and heavy oak beams ensured that future generations could stand inside an authentic space of the revolutionary era.
