Eero Saarinen: The Neofuturist Who Reshaped the Skyline

Born August 20, 1910, in Finland, Eero Saarinen became one of America’s most visionary architects after naturalizing in 1940. Trained at Cranbrook—where he collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames—Saarinen rejected boxy modernism in favor of sweeping, organic forms that embodied mid‑century optimism.

His masterpieces include the stainless‑steel Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the wing‑like terminal at Dulles International Airport, and the sculptural TWA Flight Center at JFK. Saarinen fused engineering and art to create structures that seemed perpetually in motion, leaving a permanent imprint on America’s civic and corporate landscape.
