On August 16, 1944, American forces entered Chartres, still occupied by German troops. Amid fears that the ancient cathedral had become an enemy observation post, Colonel Welborn Barton Griffith Jr. challenged the order to destroy it. The cathedral—built over 66 years in the 1200s—stood moments away from being shelled.
Before a single round could be fired, Griffith ventured behind enemy lines, climbed to the bell tower, and proved the structure was not being used by German forces. His display of artistic reverence and military nerve saved one of the world’s greatest architectural masterpieces from annihilation.
Accompanied by a single volunteer soldier, he slipped past machine-gun nests, breached the massive doors, and searched the dark galleries up to the highest spires, finding no enemy presence. Griffith was killed later that afternoon in a separate engagement, but his initiative ensured Chartres Cathedral survived the war untouched.
