On August 15, 1776, a massive flotilla of British transport ships dropped anchor off the southern shores of Staten Island, New York. Disembarking from the vessels were more than 8,600 heavily armed foreign soldiers—the first major contingent of German troops to reach the rebellious American colonies. Yet just days after sounding the alarm, Greene was struck down by a sudden, life-threatening case of severe fever. This illness permanently sidelined Washington’s most trusted strategist at the absolute climax of the campaign, forcing a replacement commander into the lines who did not know the terrain and leaving the American forces dangerously exposed to the oncoming Hessian onslaught at the Battle of Long Island.
