Nathanael Greene: The Fighting Quaker Who Exhausted an Empire

Born on August 7, 1742, Nathanael Greene rose from a pacifist Rhode Island Quaker background to become one of the Continental Army’s most brilliant strategists. Cast out of his religious community for taking up arms, Greene masterminded the Southern Campaign with a style of warfare built on mobility, controlled retreats, and relentless attrition.

Greene rarely sought — or won — large set‑piece battles. Instead, he forced Cornwallis into exhausting pursuits across the Carolinas, bleeding British strength until their position collapsed. His campaign set the stage for Yorktown and earned him Cornwallis’s grudging praise as “as dangerous as Washington.”
