The Maxwell Runabout and the 59‑Day Continental Trek - Heartfelt History™

The Maxwell Runabout and the 59‑Day Continental Trek

On August 7, 1909, Alice Huyler Ramsey rolled into San Francisco after a 59‑day journey from Manhattan, becoming the first woman to drive across the United States. Behind the wheel of her 30‑horsepower Maxwell runabout, Ramsey navigated mud, prairies, mountains, and a nation where fewer than four percent of roads were paved.

She often followed telephone poles to stay on course and handled nearly every mechanical challenge herself. Ramsey’s 3,800‑mile crossing proved both the durability of early automobiles and the capability of women drivers, shattering the era’s conservative assumptions about stamina, skill, and independence.
