William Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition, was born on August 1, 1770 in Caroline County, Virginia.
Following the expedition William got married and later named his first son after Meriwether Lewis.
Clark’s profound bond with Meriwether Lewis extended far past their historic military mapping of the American West. When Lewis tragically and mysteriously died of gunshot wounds just three years after their return, Clark was utterly devastated and stepped in to preserve his friend’s complicated legacy by managing the publication of their extensive expedition journals. His decision to name his firstborn son Meriwether Lewis Clark Sr. was a permanent tribute to that unbreakable brotherhood formed in the wild. Clark’s later life saw him transition into a powerful, empathetic, yet highly conflicted statesman as the Superintendent of Indian Affairs, a role in which he tried to negotiate fair treaties while simultaneously executing the harsh expansionist policies of the federal government.
