Sparked by fierce working‑class resentment toward the Union’s new federal conscription laws, the city devolved into four days of unprecedented civil unrest, arson, and targeted racial violence that pushed the home front to its breaking point.
To restore order to the burning metropolis, the federal government took drastic military action.
