John Hancock’s defiance: July 4th, 1776 by Currier and Ives, c. 1876, via Library of Congress, no known restrictions.
While this iconic print captures the foundational lore of American rebellion, historical records indicate that July 4th was primarily the day the text of the Declaration was formally approved. The physical, large-scale ceremonial signing on parchment by most delegates—including John Hancock—did not actually take place until August 2, 1776.
