On June 9, 1959, the United States Navy permanently altered the calculus of global warfare with the launch of the USS George Washington at Groton, Connecticut. As the world’s very first operational ballistic missile submarine, this nuclear‑powered vessel was specifically engineered to carry and launch 16 solid‑propellant Polaris missiles, introducing an entirely new, stealthy dimension to America’s military capabilities
The ship’s revolutionary design was achieved through a desperate, high‑stakes engineering shortcut to beat the Soviet Union in the Cold War race. Instead of designing a brand‑new submarine from scratch, builders took the blueprints of a partially built attack submarine, the USS Scorpion, but the actual hull cut in half and lengthened on the construction floor was her sister ship, USS Scamp. A massive 130‑foot missile compartment was welded into the center of the vessel. This daring industrial patchwork created the ultimate underwater nuclear deterrent years ahead of schedule.
