The Imperial Picnic: King George VI Visits the United States

On June 8, 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth arrived in Washington, D.C., becoming the first reigning British monarchs ever to set foot on American soil. President Franklin D. Roosevelt welcomed them with full state ceremony, drawing enormous crowds as the royal couple toured the capital and attended a formal White House dinner.

Behind the pageantry, the visit was a carefully orchestrated exercise in quiet diplomacy. With Europe on the brink of war, Roosevelt sought to build American sympathy for Britain. He brought the King and Queen to his Hyde Park estate for an informal picnic, famously serving them hot dogs on paper plates. The relaxed, unguarded moment captivated the public and helped soften American isolationism, laying early groundwork for the Anglo‑American partnership that would define the coming war.
