The Hand That Drew the Magic: The Birth of C.C. Beck

On June 8, 1910, legendary comic book artist C.C. Beck was born in Zumbrota, Minnesota. Beck would go on to co-create and serve as the chief artist for Captain Marvel (now widely known as Shazam), defining the Golden Age of comics with his clean, cinematic, and beautifully cartoony illustration style.

During the 1940s, Beck’s Captain Marvel was so staggeringly popular that his comic books consistently outsold Superman. His lighthearted, whimsical approach to a superhero struck such a massive chord with young audiences that Captain Marvel Adventures became the first monthly comic book to ever move over one million copies per issue.
