On June 8, 1933, a roaring crowd of 60,000 fans packed Yankee Stadium to watch a thrilling heavyweight boxing match. California’s charismatic Max Baer delivered a devastating, relentless right-hand assault to drop Germany’s former world champion, Max Schmeling. The referee stepped in to stop the bout at 1 minute and 51 seconds into the tenth round, declaring Baer the winner by TKO.
The fight carried massive geopolitical stakes just months after Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in Germany. Schmeling was heavily promoted by the Nazi regime as a symbol of Aryan supremacy. In defiance, Baer—who was of Jewish heritage—entered the ring wearing boxing trunks prominently embroidered with a large Star of David, turning his athletic victory into a massive, symbolic blow against fascist propaganda.
